Restoration Burundi (Restobu) has contributed to improving the learning conditions at Kibonde Technical School in Kirundo Province, Busoni Commune, by donating 30 desks. The lack of desks is a pressing issue in many schools across Burundi, where students often struggle with overcrowded and inadequate classroom furniture. This donation comes as a relief to students and teachers alike, helping to create a more conducive learning environment.

We have a serious problem with desks. One desk is shared by three pupils; once it is broken, you find four pupils on one desk. This makes it hard for students to focus and for teachers to ensure effective learning. We are thankful to this organization, Restoration Burundi, for giving us the desks. They should give us more if possible.” said Celestin Nshimirimana, Parents’ Council representative.

The donation of desks is especially timely as Kibonde High School recently opened a new section dedicated to computer skills. However, despite this development, the school still faces significant challenges, including a lack of classrooms, materials, and teaching staff.

Well done for giving us the desks. We have opened another section. We were really in need of the desks, and we are still in need of more desks because next year, we will open the second class for this new section. This means a need for another room, more desks, more staff, and various other materials, including books and computers. We are thankful for the desks. However, when you manage to find more, you could give us others.” said Vincent Nsabirabandi, the School Director.

A proper learning environment goes beyond just having teachers and books; it includes fundamental infrastructure such as seating arrangements that allow students to engage comfortably in lessons. When students have their own space to sit and write, their focus and academic performance improve. Additionally, well-furnished classrooms foster discipline, enhance teacher-student interaction, and reduce classroom distractions caused by discomfort and overcrowding.

Restoration Burundi’s intervention also aims to support reintegrating returnee students into the school system. By providing essential resources like desks, the organization is ensuring that these students can learn in a dignified setting, thereby reducing school dropout rates. Many students who have returned from neighboring countries struggle with adjusting to the local education system, and creating an encouraging learning atmosphere is key to their success.

We are grateful for how Restoration Burundi is collaborating with the administration and how it is helping inculcate positive values among young learners,” said the administrator of Busoni Commune. He further urged students to embrace the values being taught, emphasizing that these lessons would benefit them in everyday life.

The donation of desks may seem like a small gesture, but its impact is profound. It is a step toward equitable education, ensuring that students, regardless of their background, can pursue their studies in a suitable environment. As Kibonde Technical School continues to grow, additional support in the form of desks will be crucial in shaping the future of many young learners.
